EXCLUSIVE: Oliver Stone has set his sights on Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play asylum-seeking CIA leaker Edward Snowden in the movie that Stone and his producing partner Moritz Borman intend to shoot D…
Variety is even more explicit: “Sources tell Variety that Stone has offered the part to Joseph Gordon-Levitt and that the actor has agreed to do it. Though negotiations have not yet begun, both sides want the deal to happen.”
My 2 cents:
I’m a bit torn on this one but not because of the controversy surrounding the subject and director.
The Snowden story had an immense world wide impact, so it’s inevitably going to get the movie treatment. But I feel that at this point we only know half of the story - literally. We don’t know how the story ends with Snowden now sitting in Russia. It seems too early for a movie about him, even if it focuses only on a fraction of his story. It looks like Stone is rushing to to be the first one to get this movie out and that combined with my concern above doesn’t bode well for how the movie will be regarded in the long run.
As for Stone, I like that Joe is slowly working through the classics and it’s nearly impossible to say “no” when someone like Spielberg, Zemeckis or Stone wants you for their project. But I wish, Joe would collaborate more with exciting contemporary directors, whose relevant films weren’t released a decade or two ago.
From an acting viewpoint this is golden for Joe though.
